FV 4034 Challenger 2 is a British main battle tank (MBT) in service with the British Army.

A total of approximately 447 Challenger 2 main battle tanks have been manufactured by Alvis plc (BAE Systems Land & Armaments since 2004) between 1993 and 2002.

Challenger 2 MBT entered service with the British army starting with 1998. The British main battle tank has a price per unit of L4,217,000.

Challenger 2 has a standard mass of 62.5 tonnes and equipped with add-on armour modules and combat-ready, the total weight of the tank reaches 75.0 tonnes (73.8 long tons; 82.7 short tons).

Regarding the dimensions, the hull of the Challenger 2 has a length of 8.3 m (27 ft 3 in), with an overall length of 13.50 m (44 ft 3 in) with the gun forward.

The standard width is 3.5 m (11 ft 6 in), but when equipped with appliqué armour, the width increases to 4.2 m (13 ft 9 in).

Challenger 2 has a height of 2.49 m (8 ft 2 in), and a ground clearance of 0.5 m (1 ft 8 in).

The crew consists of four (4) persons including the commander, the gunner, the loader/operator, and the driver.

The FV 4034 Challenger 2 has a classified Chobham (Dorchester) Level 2 armour.

Chobham armour is a composite armour developed by the British Tank Research Centre in Chobham Common, Surrey, in the 1960s.

Challenger 2 has a 120 mm L30A1 rifled gun with 47 rounds, and, as secondary armament, is equipped with a 7.62 mm L94A1 EX-34 coaxial chain gun, and a 7.62 mm L37A2 Operator/Loader's hatch machine gun.

Challenger 2 is powered by a 1,200 bhp (890 kW) Perkins CV12-6A V12 26.1 litre diesel engine coupled to a David Brown TN54E epicyclic transmission with eight (8) gears (6 forward and 2 reverse).

It has a power-to-weight ratio of 19.2 hp/t (14.3 kW/t) at 62.5t and 16.0 hp/t (11.9 kW/t) at 75.0t.

With a fuel capacity of 1,592 litres (350 imp gal; 421 US gal) and using a hydropneumatic suspension, Challenger 2 tank has an operational range of 550 km (340 mi) on-road and 250 km (160 mi) off-road.

It can reach a maximum speed of 59 km/h (37 mph) on road, and 40 km/h (25 mph) off-road.
