Posted by: Andrei Dcs

TR-85M1 Bizonul is a Romanian main battle tank (MBT), a modernized variant of the standard TR-85 main battle tank.

The TR-85 standard variant was designed between 1978 and 1986 by Institute 111, Directia Tancuri si Auto (EN: Tanks and Cars Department).

The production of the standard TR-85 models took place between 1986 and 1990 at the Bucharest Mechanical Factory (Uzina Mecanica Bucuresti), part of the ROMARM military consortium.

The first TR-85 main battle tanks entered service with the Romanian Army in 1986.

The upgrade of the TR-85M1 standard was made between 1997 and 2009. Only 54 TR-85 tanks were upgraded, forming a battalion.

The TR-85M1 Bizonul is currently the most modern Romanian main battle tank in the Romanian Army inventory.

In the near future, the TR-85M1s along with the TR-85 standard models and the outdated T-55s and TR-580s will be replaced by a new main battle tank, most probably the American M1 Abrams or the German Leopard 2.

TR-85M1 Bizonul has a mass of 50 tonnes (55.12 tons) and an overall length (with the gun forward) of 9.96 m (32.7 ft) (with gun forward).

It measures 3.435 m (11.27 ft) in width and 3.10 m (10.2 ft) in height.

The crew of the TR-85M1 consists of four (4) persons including the commander, the driver, the gunner, and the loader.

The hull of the TR-85M1 is made of composite stratified armour with a maximum thickness of 200 mm.

The turret is made of the same composite armor with a thickness of 320 mm and has add-on composite modules with a thickness of 20 mm.

TR-85M1 has a 100 mm A-308 rifled bore gun with a rate of fire of four to seven (4-7) rounds per minute.

As secondary armament, TR-85M1 is fitted with a 12.7 mm DShK anti-aircraft heavy machine gun and a 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun.

The ammunition onboard numbers 41 rounds for the 100 mm cannon, 750 rounds for the 12.7 DShK AA MG, and 500 rounds for the 7.62 mm machine gun.

TR-85M1 Bizonul is powered by an 860 hp (640 kW) Model 8VS-A2T2M, 8-cylinders, 4 stroke cycle turbocharged direct injection diesel engine rated at 2300 rpm, coupled to a THM-5800 hydromechanical transmission with six (6) gears (4 forward and 2 reverse).

The TR-85M1 has a power-to-weight ratio of 17.2 hp/tonne.

The Romanian MBT uses a torsion bar suspension with eight (8) telescopic hydro-gas shock absorbers.
