Type 90 Kyu-maru is a Japanese main battle tank (MBT) developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The Type 90 tank was designed by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries together with the Japan Ministry of Defense Technology Research and Development Institute.

A total of 341 Type 90 main battle tanks were manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries between 1990 and 2009.

With a mass of 50.2 tonnes, Type 90 has a crew of three (3) and measures 9.76 m in length, 3.43 m in width, and 2.34 m in height.

Type 90 MBT has modular ceramic and steel composite armour and uses a 120 mm Rheinmetall smoothbore gun with an automatic loader.

As additional armament, it is also equipped with a 12.7 mm M2HB heavy machine gun and a 7.62 mm Type 74 machine gun.

The Type 90 tank is powered by a 1,500 hp Mitsubishi 10ZG 10-cylinder, two-stroke cycle, 21.5-liter diesel engine rated at 2,400 rpm.

The Mitsubishi 10ZG diesel engine is coupled to a Mitsubishi MT1500 automatic transmission with six (6) gears (4 forward and 2 reverse).

With an engine power of 1,500 hp and at a weight of 50.2 tonnes, the Type 90 MBT has a power-to-weight ratio of 30 hp/tonne.

Type 90 Kyu-maru uses a hybrid hydropneumatic and torsion bar suspension system and has an operational range of 350 km.

It reaches a maximum speed of 70 km/h on roads and accelerates from 0 to 200 m in 20 seconds.
